Rocky start, but you brought it home Rob. I know no one wants to speak I’ll of old Stanley but I think there’s an obvious likely conclusion here. Looking forward to reading that recent biography of Stan Lee that’s s’posed to take a more critical eye.
Its a little known fact but the proof of purchase cut-outs from general mills cereals could also be used towards Kenner Star Wars mail-aways.
I too am a fan of Mr. Wood. And I totally agree with your opinion of his work and in fact your opinion of Kirby, Byrn, Romita, Perez and more…. titans of the art! But as well as you research your topics and try to be fair and tactful perhaps your esteem for Mr. Wood has allowed you to overlook the fact that Wood’s best work was in the 50’s and 60’s when he was reliable. Because of my admiration for him I’ve read of stories of excessive drinking, bad health due to constant smoking, late night calls to other admiring professionals to help him finish story assignments that he and he alone signed. This is documented and tarnishes his reputation a bit. I had a grandfather who was an alcoholic and its well known the worse the disease progresses the more difficult the person effected is to deal with. There may be more here than Stan ever mentioned due to his obvious admiration for Wally. At this point in his career with mounting medical bills, drinking, divorce and other problems Wood was not at his best. Also in this constant bickering pro/anti Stan (which you tactfully stay away from) Wood, Kirby and other critics ignor the fact that besides writing or dialoging or whatever Stan was the editor. He hired he fired he was responsible for getting projects out on time and massaging the egos of very talented and sometimes opinionated artist and writer egos. Stan got all the love and money and acclaim he deserved in his lifetime but I have never heard anyone point out he was a successful editor for 25 years literally keeping Timely/Marvel afloat during the bad old day writing hundred of stories full script because he couldn’t afford to hire a writer. He never gets credit for this. Hew never gets credit for hiring Kirby when no one else would, giving Ditko his first big break, finding Steranko and keeping Romita and giving Gil Kane all the work and freedom he wanted and needed due to costly personal matters. We’ll never know the real story of Wood/Lee and Kirby/Lee but maybe Robservations should address the value of a good editor in all writing, literature and video.
